In short
Medical underwriting is the part of the application where an insurer assesses your health and medical history to decide terms for cover.
Medical underwriting focuses on your health and lifestyle. You answer questions about existing and past conditions, medication, family history, smoking and alcohol use, height and weight, and any tests or referrals you are waiting on. The insurer uses these answers to price the cover accurately.
Depending on your answers, the insurer may follow up with more questions, request a GP report with your consent, or arrange a nurse screening for larger amounts of cover. Most applications do not need a medical exam.
Answering medical questions fully and accurately is essential. You have a legal duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, and careless or deliberate non-disclosure can lead to a claim being reduced or declined later.
